The Bexley VTS Scheme offers various social and arts activities to enhance the learning and development of GP trainees.
These social and arts activities aim to create a supportive and engaging learning environment, encouraging trainees to develop both personally and professionally.
Weekly VTS teaching sessions are held on Wednesday afternoons from 2-5pm. The sessions aim to meet educational needs in an engaging and interactive manner, fostering a supportive environment with Program Directors and peers. These are a mix of face-to-face and online learning sessions.
Trainees have the opportunity to attend plays such as 'Further than the Furthest Thing' at Young Vic, Waterloo, 'The Phlebotomist' by Ella Road at South London Theatre West Norwood, and 'Rebel Boob' at The Cockpit Theatre Marylebone. These plays not only provide enjoyment but also encourage reflective practice through creative means.
Trainees can participate in the VTS book club, which meets once a year in a VTS session to discuss themes in selected books. Some of the books we have discussed include 'Between the World and Me' by Ta-Nehisi Coates, 'Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People about Race' by Reni-Eddo-Lodge, and 'We Are Displaced' by Malala Yousafzai. This activity promotes the importance of human stories and patient experiences in professional and personal development.
Trainees come together for BBQs, providing a casual setting to bond and share thoughts and ideas about their training journey and life in general. These are normally hosted in Nelun's lovely back garden!
These days offer an opportunity for team learning in different environments. Trainees spend a whole day focusing on different aspects of general practice or self-development, working in groups and getting to know their peers. The days often include guest speakers, trainee-led sessions, and visits to places of interest to GPs, along with enjoyable meals.
The VTS scheme has dedicated social secretaries (usually a couple of the trainees) who organize additional social events such as meals out, music events, and other opportunities to unwind and get to know fellow trainees.
Trainees can opt to join the VTS WhatsApp group, providing access to current information and the chance to ask questions and receive answers from peers who may have knowledge and experience in relevant areas.
