What does Gp training entail?

GP training  is a 3 year programme, consisting of one year in secondary care posts and one year comprising 6 months GP pure and 6 months ITP (Integrated Training Posts).  The final year is spent in a GP placement.    Each week, trainees have a Wednesday afternoon dedicated to teaching sessions. In Bexley, these are held at the Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup, and they are a great way to catch up with peers and engage in interesting learning topics.

During the 3 years, trainees have to undertake two exams, the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT) and the Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA).

Alongside exams, trainees to have to maintain an online E-portfolio  found on fourteenfish.com, undertaking workplace-based assessments, and regular reflections on their daily practice aiming towards a yearly ARCP similar to the foundation years.

What does Gp training entail?

General Practice (GP) training is a comprehensive three-year program designed to equip future doctors with the skills and knowledge needed for effective community healthcare.

Structure of GP Training

ST 1/2: Trainees spend this year either in secondary care posts, gaining essential experience in hospital settings. Or

  • 6 months in GP Practice: Focusing on hands-on experience in a GP setting.
  • 6 months in Integrated Training Posts (ITP): This allows trainees to work in various specialties while still engaging with primary care.

ST 3: The final year is dedicated entirely to GP placement, where trainees further develop their skills in a real-world environment.

Each week, trainees have Wednesday afternoons set aside for teaching sessions. In Bexley VTS, these sessions are held at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Sidcup.

This provides an excellent opportunity to connect with peers and explore engaging learning topics.

Assessments and Progression

Trainees undergo various assessments to ensure they are meeting competency standards:

  • Examinations: Trainees must complete two key assessments:
    • Applied Knowledge Test (AKT): A written exam typically taken in the second year.
    • Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA): An assessment that evaluates practical skills, taken in the final year.
  • E-Portfolio: Trainees maintain an online E-portfolio through FourteenFish, which includes workplace-based assessments and regular reflections on their daily practice.

  1. Interim Educational Supervisors’ Reports (iESRs/ESRs): Completed every six months to assess and provide feedback on progress.
  2. Annual Review of Competence Progression (ARCP): Conducted at the end of each training year after ESR, this review assesses whether trainees have met the required competencies to progress
