Below are some of the success stories of our most recent graduates from Bexley GP VTS.
Hear about their time over the past 3 years of training, and what their next steps will be.
"I spent two months working at Greenwich and Bexley community hospice on a palliative care placement. It has stuck in my mind as one of the most valuable places of my training. The hospice was such a warm and welcoming place and I learnt so much about symptom control, holistic medicine, breaking bad news and having difficult conversations with patients and relatives. People often think hospices are gloomy places but I can honestly say this is not the case here. The trainers were excellent and the wider team were really friendly and supportive. The skills and knowledge I developed here have been so helpful throughout the rest of my training and I now feel confident with what can be quite a daunting area of medicine going forward into my future career."
"The Bexley and Sidcup VTS is well situated in leafy South-East London, allowing you quick access to Central London, as well as the South-East Coast of England. There are many local sites to visit e.g., Eltham Palace, Chislehurst Caves, Hall Place and Gardens, Danson House, and Foots Cray Meadows. Given its proximity to Southeast England, this is also a great area for lots of day trips or weekends away e.g., Margate, Whitstable, Brighton, Canterbury, Dover, and the Kent Downs/High Weald 'Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. If you are a keen shopper, there are many town centres nearby e.g., Bexleyheath and Bromley, or you can try out the massive Bluewater Shopping Centre in Dartford. If you prefer the quieter village style shopping areas, then try Bexley Village or Chislehurst High Streets, as well as many local farmers markets!"
"My Community Psychiatry rotation in GPST1 involved outpatient work as part of the Old Age Community Mental Health Team at the Bexleyheath Centre, as well as inpatient on call work on Acute Adult Psychiatry wards at Queen Mary Hospital, Sidcup. The opportunity to work with patients of different ages and diagnoses within Psychiatry has been rewarding and I hope will prepare me well for managing psychiatric conditions in primary care. I have really enjoyed conducting home visits in the local area, which are often to care homes. Working across multiple sites has meant I have had the opportunity to meet even more doctors, nurses and social workers, than I would if I was only on one site, which has provided me with increased learning opportunities.
I applied to the Bexley VTS because I wanted to live and work in London, having established roots and connections here since my medical school days. Bexley is an ideal place to be considering how easy it is to get into central London, while also being close to Kent. This scheme offers rotations within settings in a range of areas; both within London (such as Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich) as well as outer London and Kent. I consider the variety in patient population this offers to be invaluable as I progress through my General Practice training and beyond."
